They enable students to learn and work effectively with a diversity of people. They also encourage students to accept responsibilities, to take risks and learn from mistakes, to become effective problem solvers, and to develop expertise in self-expression. Staff and parents help students discover that learning can be fun.

School Programs

Sheridan’s Resource Program serves students in kindergartent through grade 5. Regular classroom teachers, resource teachers, administrators, and parents work collaboratively when planning effective instruction for resource students. This commitment requires beliefs that each student can learn and succeed, that diversity enriches all learners, students at risk for failure can overcome that risk through involvement in a thoughtful and caring community, each student has unique contributions to offer to the community of learners, and each student has strengths and needs.Teachers, administrators, parents, and students meet yearly to develop individual education plans to meet the needs of each special education student.

Student Assistance

Sheridan's School Assistance Team consists of teacher representatives, the school psychologist, and the school coordinator. The team's purpose is to identify students experiencing problems that interfere with their ability to learn, to provide strategies to help students learn, and to provide students and parents with a support system within and outside the school setting to address student concerns. Students are referred to the SAT team by teachers, administrators, or parents. If behaviors indicate there might be a drug or alcohol-related problem, action is taken through an intervention process.

Gifted Program

Sheridan has 106 differentiated learners. Students are recommended for gifted identification by parents, teachers, administrators, community members, or self-referral. Recommendations can be made to Sheridan’s School Coordinator Barb Peterson or Principal Mary Kanter. When a student is recommended for gifted identification, Mrs. Peterson guides teachers through the data gathering process. Students are evaluated based on their grades and classroom performance, outstanding products, behavioral checklists, standardized achievement test scores, or IQ test scores.Once a student is identified he/she is offered differentiated classes in the area of English/language arts and math.

Science Enrichment

A strong emphasis is placed on the study of science at Sheridan.Marietta Eckel, a fifth grade teacher, is the science facilitator. Sheridan's annual Science Fair is coordinated by a parent volunteer for students in kindergarten through grade 5. Fifth graders are required to enter the Science Fair, but many students from all grade levels also submit entries.

The Arts

Parents and staff at Sheridan demonstrate a strong belief that students grow from exposure to the arts. Sheridan has many upper elementary students involved in the vocal, strings, and instrumental music programs. Students perform for parents and community members as often as opportunities arise, and winter and spring concerts are held annually.

In addition, Sheridan offers several arts enrichment activities every year. Students benefit as they develop an enthusiasm for the arts and an appreciation and understanding that enhances all areas of learning.
